A Class 9 student in Sector 56 comes home with a maths test. Thirty-eight out of fifty. Last year the same child scored in the high eighties without much effort. Nothing has gone wrong at home. The chapters simply got harder, and the old way of studying quietly stopped working.

This is the most common maths problem in Gurugram homes, from DLF Phase 3 to New Gurugram. It is almost never about being "bad at maths". It is about habits that were fine in Class 6 and are not enough now.

Below are ten habits that make a real difference for students in Classes 6 to 12, whatever the board. None need a new reference book or a paid app. They need forty minutes a day and some honesty about what you cannot yet do alone.

Why do maths marks drop in Class 9 and 10?

Marks drop because the subject shifts from doing steps to choosing steps. Until Class 8, most questions look like the solved example printed just above them. From Class 9, a single question mixes two chapters and hides which method you need. A student who memorised procedures suddenly has nothing to fall back on.

You can usually spot this before the marks fall. Watch for these signs:

  • Your child can finish homework smoothly but freezes when the same sum appears in a test with different numbers.
  • They start every problem by hunting for a similar solved example in the book.
  • Rough work is thin. Three lines, then the answer, then a wrong answer.

How much maths should you practise every day?

Thirty to forty-five minutes a day, six days a week, beats one four-hour session on Sunday. Maths is a skill, like tabla or a jump shot. Short daily contact keeps methods fresh, so you spend your time solving instead of remembering. Long gaps force you to relearn the chapter before you can use it.

Protect the small slot

Forty minutes is short enough that skipping it feels silly, which is the point. Keep the phone in another room, not face down on the table. On heavy homework days, cut it to twenty minutes rather than dropping it.

Keeping an error notebook that actually helps

An error notebook is a plain register where you copy every question you got wrong, plus the exact point where you went wrong. Not the full solution. Just the question, your mistake in one line, and the correct step. Ten minutes after every test or worksheet. Before exams, you revise this notebook instead of the whole textbook.

Most students who try this give up because they copy entire solutions and it takes an hour. Keep entries tiny.

What one good entry looks like

  • Question: Solve 2x squared minus 7x plus 3 equals 0.
  • My mistake: Took the middle term split as 6 and 1 instead of 6 and 1 with the correct signs.
  • Correct step: Product must be plus 6, sum must be minus 7, so both numbers are negative.
  • Tag: sign error, third time this month.

That last line is where the value sits. After a month, Meera in Class 10 could see that most of her lost marks were sign and unit errors, not concept gaps. She did not need to redo algebra. Solving problems without looking at the solution

Close the answer key. Give yourself ten honest minutes on a problem before you look at anything. The struggle is the part that builds memory. Reading a worked solution feels productive and teaches your brain very little, because recognition is not the same as recall. Studies on memory consistently find that trying to retrieve something beats rereading it.

A workable rule for a stuck problem:

  1. Ten minutes of real attempt. Write something, even a wrong start. Blank staring does not count.
  2. Still stuck? Read only the first line of the solution, then cover it and continue alone.
  3. Still stuck after that? Read the full solution, close the book, and rewrite it from memory on a fresh page.
  4. Mark that question. Redo it from scratch three days later. If you cannot, it was never learnt.
If you can follow a solution but cannot start one, you have not learned the chapter yet.

One trade-off worth naming: this is slower. Five problems done this way cover less ground than twenty solutions read. For a fortnight it will look like your child is falling behind. Around week four, tests start showing the difference.

Understanding why a method works, not just the steps

Before using any formula, you should be able to say in one plain sentence what it does and when it applies. The quadratic formula, for instance, gives the values of x where the curve crosses the x-axis. Students who can say this pick the right method under exam pressure. Students who only memorised steps guess.

Two quick tests you can run at home:

  • The younger sibling test. Ask your child to explain the chapter to someone two classes below, with no textbook open. Wherever they stumble is the gap.
  • The "when would I use this" test. Ask them to write one line describing the kind of question this formula answers. If they cannot, they are pattern-matching, not understanding.

This matters more in some boards than others. ICSE and IGCSE papers ask for reasoning openly, while CBSE mixes short recall with case-based questions. Either way, the "why" is what carries you through an unfamiliar question.

How to revise maths formulas so they stay in your head

Write formulas from memory on a blank sheet, then check what you missed. Reading a formula list ten times does almost nothing. Writing it out once from memory does far more. Keep one A4 sheet per chapter, and every Sunday, rewrite the whole sheet blank. It takes about fifteen minutes and it is the cheapest revision available.

Better still, learn which formulas you can rebuild instead of remember. Most trigonometric identities come from two or three basic ones. Derive them in forty seconds and a blank moment in the exam hall costs you nothing.

The blank-sheet Sunday

Give your child a plain sheet and ask for every formula from the current chapter, no book, no notes. Then compare against the textbook and circle the missing ones in red. Those circled formulas are the only ones that need work this week. The rest are already safe.

Practising with a timer before exams

Roughly two months before boards, start solving with a clock. Give a three-hour paper exactly three hours, in one sitting, ideally at the same time of day as the real exam. Untimed practice hides the real problem, which for most students is speed and careless slips rather than missing knowledge.

How to run a proper mock at home:

  1. Print the paper. Solving on screen is not the same as writing for three hours by hand.
  2. Phone in another room, timer visible, no break in the first hour.
  3. Do not stop when stuck. Leave it, move on, come back. That decision is itself a skill.
  4. Check it yourself against the marking scheme, harshly. Log every lost mark in the error notebook.

When does a maths tutor actually help?

A tutor helps most when there are gaps from earlier classes that the school cannot go back and fix. A Class 10 student weak in Class 8 algebra will keep struggling however many hours they put in. A good tutor finds that gap and rebuilds it. A tutor cannot help if nothing happens between sessions.

Be honest about which situation you are in:

  • A tutor will help if your child understands in class but cannot start problems alone, or if there is a clear backlog from two or three classes ago.
  • A tutor will not help much if the real issue is attention, sleep or a phone at midnight. Fix that first.
  • Group tuition rarely fixes an old gap, because the batch has to move at syllabus pace.

Ask for a diagnostic, not a demo lecture

In a first session, a maths tutor should spend twenty minutes finding out what your child cannot do, not teaching the current chapter impressively. Ask afterwards which earlier topic is weak. A tutor who cannot name one has not looked.

What to do this week

Pick three habits, not ten. Start the error notebook today, fix one forty-minute daily slot, and close the answer key for the current chapter. Give it three weeks before judging whether it works. Habits change quickly. Marks follow later, usually after the second test.

  1. Practise 30 to 45 minutes daily instead of one long weekend session.
  2. Keep an error notebook with one-line entries, and tag repeated mistakes.
  3. Attempt every problem for ten minutes before opening the solution.
  4. Redo wrongly solved questions from scratch three days later.
  5. Say out loud what each formula does before you use it.
  6. Rewrite chapter formula sheets from memory every Sunday.
  7. Derive what you can derive instead of memorising it.
  8. Solve one full paper under exam timing every fortnight in the last two months.
  9. Check your own paper against the marking scheme and log every lost mark.
  10. Explain one concept a week to someone younger, with the book closed.
