Every October, Gurugram parents with a Class 11 child face a version of the same conversation. The child is in Science or Commerce. They are enrolled in coaching, or thinking about it, and the question is which exam do we actually prepare for?
The confusion is understandable. Three national exams, all happening within months of each other in 2027, all covered breathlessly by coaching centre advertising, all claiming to be the one that matters. The truth is simpler, because each exam opens a specific door and none of them is interchangeable with the others.
This guide explains exactly what each exam is for, how the syllabuses overlap, what the real preparation demands are, and, most practically, how to decide which one your child should focus on right now.
The Three Exams: What Each One Actually Is
What it opens: Undergraduate admission to Delhi University, JNU, BHU, Hyderabad University, Jamia Millia, and all 45 central universities, plus 200+ state and private universities that now accept CUET scores. It covers BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, LLB, BFA, BHM, and most other UG programmes.
Who should give it: Any Class 12 student who wants admission to any of the 260+ participating universities, regardless of stream. Arts students, Commerce students, and Science students all have domain subjects relevant to their field. Science students applying for BSc at DU must give CUET. Commerce students applying for BCom at DU must give CUET.
What the paper looks like: Three sections comprising Domain Subjects (1 to 6 subjects from Class 12 syllabus, 45 minutes each, 50 questions), Language Test (English or Hindi or both, 45 minutes, 50 questions), and General Test (optional, 60 questions, 60 minutes, covering quantitative aptitude, general knowledge, and logical reasoning). Students select their sections based on the universities and programmes they are applying to.
Difficulty level: Based on Class 12 NCERT. Not beyond-NCERT. A well-prepared Class 12 student who has genuinely understood their NCERT chapters (not just memorised them), should find CUET manageable without separate preparation.
2027 Key Dates: Registration expected January–February 2027 at cuet.nta.nic.in. Exam in May–June 2027. Results in June 2027.
What it opens: Engineering admission at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs via Mains. IIT admission requires additionally qualifying JEE Advanced (only top ~2.5 lakh Mains qualifiers are eligible). There is no shortcut, as JEE Mains is the gate to every engineering college in the NTA system.
Who should give it: Class 11 students in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) who want to pursue engineering. Not relevant for students pursuing medicine, arts, or commerce. A Science student who wants to do BSc, not B.Tech, does not need JEE.
What the paper looks like: 300 marks. Physics 100 + Chemistry 100 + Mathematics 100. 75 questions answered (20 MCQ + 5 Numerical per subject). 3 hours. MCQ carries −1 for wrong answers; Numerical carries 0 for wrong. CBT mode.
Difficulty level: Significantly harder than NCERT. JEE requires problem-solving fluency rather than just concept recall. A student who has only read NCERT will not be ready. At minimum 200 to 250 problems per chapter need to be practised to build the speed and accuracy JEE demands.
2027 Key Dates: Registration opens last week of October 2026 (most urgent deadline right now), followed by Session 1 exams from January 22 to 30, 2027, Session 2 in April 2027, and results in February 2027.
What it opens: Medical admission for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and BSc Nursing. There is no other route to MBBS in India. A student who wants to become a doctor must clear NEET. Period.
Who should give it: Class 11 students in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) who want to pursue medicine. Not relevant for engineering or arts/commerce aspirants.
What the paper looks like: 720 marks. Biology 360 marks (Botany 180 + Zoology 180) + Physics 180 + Chemistry 180. 200 questions (180 to be attempted). Offline pen-and-paper until 2026, officially switching to CBT mode from NEET 2027, as confirmed by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on May 15, 2026.
Difficulty level: Conceptual and NCERT-deep. NEET does not go significantly beyond NCERT but tests every line of NCERT Biology minutely. The Biology preparation depth required is exceptional, because students who do not know specific NCERT diagrams, definitions, and exceptions lose marks on questions they technically “know.”
2027 Key Dates: Notification expected October–November 2026. Registration: December 2026–February 2027. Exam: May 2, 2027 (tentative). Results: June 2027.

The most practical insight for Class 11 planning is that these exams share a significant portion of their syllabus. A student preparing seriously for JEE or NEET does not need to treat CUET as an entirely separate exam requiring duplicate coaching.

Preparation Strategy by Path: Starting October
October–January: Full JEE preparation focus. Prioritise foundational Class 11 units including Mechanics, Chemical Bonding, Conic Sections, and GOC. Solve DPPs, coaching modules, and JEE PYQs.
- Dedicate 5–6 hours of independent self-study outside lectures (Maths 2 hrs, Physics 2 hrs, Chemistry 1.5 hrs).
- Register for JEE Mains S1 in the final week of October at jeemain.nta.nic.in without delay.
- Treat January JEE S1 as a crucial diagnostic test under authentic time constraints.
- Home tutor role: Targeted 1-on-1 doubt clearing in whichever subject has lagging concepts.
February–March: Evaluate January performance. Prepare for JEE Session 2 (April) while initiating Class 12 JEE chapters.
March–April: Spend 3–4 weeks aligning for CUET domain requirements. NCERT level is far lighter than JEE. Add daily General Test and Language format mocks.
October–January: Uncompromising NEET Biology depth, studying NCERT Biology line-by-line, mastering tables, exceptions, and diagrams. Balance with NEET Physics numerical problem solving and NCERT Chemistry reactions.
- Daily quota: Biology 2.5 hrs, Chemistry 1.5 hrs, Physics 1.5 hrs minimum.
- Watch neet.nta.nic.in for the December registration notice.
- Attempt minimum 2 full-length NEET mock tests before the end of December.
- Home tutor role: Specialized Biology and Physics mentorship to build NCERT recall speed and numerical accuracy.
February–April: Intensive NEET revision cycle covering a secondary NCERT pass, PYQs from 2018 to 2026, and high-yield chapters.
April–May: CUET domain practice alongside NEET revision. Biology CUET domain will feel straightforward after NEET preparation.
October–December: Complete NCERT mastery of selected domain subjects, including Economics (Micro & Macro), Accountancy, and Business Studies for Commerce, and History, Political Science, Geography, and Sociology for Arts.
- Read NCERT line-by-line, as CUET rewards factual recall and conceptual nuance.
- Practise CUET PYQs from 2022 to 2026 to understand question distributions.
- Review target university requirements to check whether General Test is mandatory.
- Language Test (English) needs format familiarity, vocabulary practice, and reading comprehension drills.
January–March: Complete domain revision cycles alongside General Test aptitude modules. Take full-length timed CBT tests.
April: Final mock sprint before the May exam window. Ensure registration is finalized before the April closing date.

Three Mistakes That Ruin Class 11 Exam Planning
- Attempting all three exams at full depth simultaneously: Students who try to divide study hours equally among JEE, NEET, and CUET end up genuinely mastering none of them. JEE problem-solving requires 5+ hours daily across PCM. NEET Biology memorization demands 2.5 hours every day on its own. These demands cannot coexist at maximum intensity. Pick one primary exam by November and treat the other as a manageable follow-up.
- Treating CUET as an afterthought until April panic: CUET is the single gateway to Delhi University, JNU, and BHU. It merits 3–4 weeks of structured preparation, not a frantic last-minute glance. The student who incorporates CUET into their broad calendar from October onwards stays confident throughout March and April.
- Delaying JEE Mains registration: JEE Mains Session 1 registration opens in late October 2026 and closes in late November. Candidates who stall in hopes of getting convenient test cities frequently face inconveniently allocated test centres. Register in the opening week at jeemain.nta.nic.in.
The Honest Answer: What Most Parents Need to Hear
The core question is not “which exam is most prestigious?” The question is “what career path does my child actually envision after Class 12?” Answer that first, and the exam choice clarifies itself immediately. Indecision in October usually means career dialogue has been postponed, not that entrance exams are incomprehensible.
If your child is genuinely committed to engineering, JEE is non-negotiable and CUET is a low-effort backup.
If your child is committed to medicine, NEET is non-negotiable and CUET provides a safety net for top-tier BSc life science courses.
If your child is aiming for Economics at St. Stephen’s or SRCC, History at Hindu College, or Commerce at Hansraj, CUET is the sole exam that matters, and its syllabus is directly anchored in Class 12 NCERT.
